Smetric Business Intelligence
Building a standalone application around business data, and getting hands-on with the pipelines behind the reports.
The question
How do you turn a data-collection and reporting service into a standalone application?
Smetric’s BI service collected data from separate business systems and presented it in shared Microsoft Power BI dashboards. That was the starting point for my work.
My role and approach
Through Resync Digital, now Atas.AI, I built a standalone application around that collection and presentation work.
The dashboard is the part everyone gets to see. Before it can show anything useful, the data has to get there. My work took me through the processing behind the report as well as the application presenting it.
The data workflow
The work covered three connected parts:
- Getting business data out of its source systems.
- Processing that data through a pipeline.
- Making it available for reporting and analysis in the application.
What I learned
I got hands-on experience with ETL, ELT, data-processing pipelines, and analytics workflows. Those terms became much easier to understand when I was working on software that had to do the job.
The original Power BI service is listed on Microsoft Marketplace.
