Autopit
A workshop-management SaaS I founded. One client, and a lesson in how hard it is to sell software.
The question
Could a workshop-management SaaS keep the customer, the car, and the service job together?
I built Autopit to do that. A service record belongs to a person and a vehicle, and the workshop needs to keep track of both.
My approach
I founded the product and built the application around the workshop’s records:
- A customer directory for the people bringing in their cars.
- Vehicle details connected to the service job.
- A service form and dashboard for working with those records.
Even the fuel level had a place on the form. It was tied to the car arriving at the workshop.
How it went
It got one client.
That was a much smaller number than I’d hoped for. I could build the application. Getting people to choose it was harder.
What I learned
Autopit didn’t go smoothly as a business, but I learned a lot about how difficult product marketing is.
Having working software gave me something to sell; it didn’t take care of the selling. Finding customers needed much more attention than the engineering alone could give it.
