PROJECT NOTES

Automatic Door Access

A freelance Raspberry Pi project that put face recognition and mask detection at the door.

The question

How can face recognition and mask detection become part of an automatic door-entry system?

Most of my work stays on a screen. This one ended up next to a door.

My approach

For this freelance project, I built a Raspberry Pi model that combined recognition and detection with a physical entry system.

A recognition result had a job to do in the entry process. The diagram below shows the software flows alongside the model.

Engineering details

The project brought together:

  • A Raspberry Pi for the model.
  • TensorFlow and AWS Rekognition for the recognition and detection work.
  • The physical door model shown in the demo.

See it working

A photo only gets so far with a project like this. There’s a video of the model in action if you’d like to see it working.
